When an Email Arrived at Exactly the Right Moment

Sometimes a collaboration begins with a carefully planned meeting. And sometimes, it begins with an email arriving at exactly the right moment.

The story of Mission Ansgarius and St. Rita Radio began with a rather remarkable coincidence.

Benedikte had reached out to Bishop Erik Varden of Trondheim in Norway. She wanted to share an idea about how technology could help bring the Catholic faith to people across the Nordic countries, particularly Catholics living in places where access to Catholic resources in their own language can be limited.

At almost exactly the same time, Bishop Varden was sitting in a meeting with Pål, the founder of St. Rita Radio.

For more than six years, Pål and his team had been producing Catholic content in Norwegian — podcasts, catechesis, prayers, reflections and much more. Pål had arranged the meeting with the Bishop because he wanted to discuss a question very close to his heart:

How can we better bring the Catholic faith to the Catholic minority in Norway?

And then, during that very conversation, an email notification appeared on the Bishop’s computer.

It was from Benedikte.

The subject line immediately caught his attention. The email was about bringing the Catholic faith to Catholics in the North - remarkably close to the very question Pål and Bishop Varden were discussing at that moment.

Because of the timing and the subject of the meeting, Bishop Varden opened the email. He and Pål read it together.

And they quickly agreed on one thing:

Benedikte and Pål needed to meet.

Looking back, the timing was almost too perfect to ignore. For those involved, it became a small and beautiful reminder that perhaps this was something worth taking seriously.

And so the introduction was made.

When Two Pieces Fit Together

When Benedikte and Pål finally began talking, it became immediately obvious how naturally their work complemented each other.

Benedikte had already built the software and app infrastructure for Mission Ansgarius. She had the technology and the vision for creating a platform where Catholics across the Nordic countries could access prayers, catechesis, podcasts and other resources.

Pål, Erika and the St. Rita Radio team, meanwhile, had spent more than six years doing something equally important: creating and collecting the content itself. They had built a large library of Catholic material in Norwegian and had already developed a community around it.

One had built the platform.

The other had built the content.

And suddenly, there was a very obvious question:

What if we put the two together?

From the very first conversations, the collaboration felt remarkably natural. There was a shared love for the Church, a shared concern for Catholics in the Nordic countries, and a shared desire to make good Catholic resources accessible to more people.

But the collaboration was not simply a matter of putting St. Rita Radio's content into an existing app.

There were many long conversations.

They talked about values, mission, priorities, how they wanted to work together, what Mission Ansgarius should become, which content should come first, and how we could build something that would genuinely serve the Church.

Those conversations helped shape not only the collaboration, but the project itself.

And eventually, they agreed on something beautiful: to work together.

What has come from that collaboration has been far beyond simply combining an app with a library of content.

St. Rita Radio's years of faithful work have found a new way to reach people, while Mission Ansgarius has been able to launch with a depth of Catholic content that would have taken many years to build from scratch.

What began with a perfectly timed email has become a collaboration built on shared faith, shared values and complementary gifts.

And sometimes, when you look back at how something began, you cannot help but smile at the little moments that seemed to say: “Pay attention. This might be something very important.”
